I've had my vehicle financing with ABSA since 2011. 2 months ago I was informed that I owed them R3500. When I asked what for, they said that it was for insurance. I told the call centre agent that I did not consent to any insurance from ABSA to which they responded by saying that ABSA had sent me an sms& I did not respond to they took that as consent.
I have had 3 other similar calls since then. Each time, it is the collections department that calls. When I ask them to tell the insurance division to call me, they say that the insurance division wont call me until I provide proof of insurance. Now, I was asked for proof of insurance when I applied for the finance, which I provided. I have never heard of proof of insurance being required more than 2 years after.
Never in my life have I heard of people consenting to insurance via sms. I have also never heard of insurance being taken up on someone's behalf and then listing them for not paying. I have told the call centre agents that I do have insurance but ON PRINCIPAL, I will not send any documentation as I had sent them the proof when I applied.
