Activation sms ONE day to late

I usually work from the office where I use my reliable TELKOM router for internet usage. Last night I was forced to use my cellphone with a MTN contract sim card to connect to the internet. I knew I was going to use a significant amount of data, so I first went and purchased a 24Hour data bundle with my Loyalty Points. I received my text message which confirmed that the purchase was done successfully. After receiving the text message I went online. This morning at 9:03 I received a text msg that stated that I successfully loaded a MTN Broadband Unlimited 1Day bolt on data bundle and requested that I should activate the data. This was 12 hours after receiving the first text msg. I phoned MTN (twice) to inquire about the 2nd text. I was informed that I was suppose to activate the data bundles first before using the internet, which now means that I will receive an enormous statement of account at the end of the month for data used against normal standard rate airtime. They are unwilling to correct the problem by offsetting my data purchased against data used. The procedure is unknown to me and in my opinion the 1st text should have been more clear that activation is still required.
