New contract red tape

To whom it may concern

I currently have a contract with Vodacom which is only due to expire in January 2014. The cellphone linked to this account is failing me and will no longer suffice.
I would like to start a new contract to get a better suited phone but staying with Vodacom. To start the new contract I am happy to pay to clear the current contract before the new one can commence. I also would like to keep my current number and not have a new one.

Why is it I cannot do this in one step and have to wait 6 months?
I dont want to wait 6 months without a phone or contract before I can start a new one. Can I not start a new contract on top of the current one on the same number?

What do you recommend I do without getting a new number?
Or is my only solution to move to another service provider?
