Sold modem that is not compatible with the laptop

I recently got a laptop and modem on contract through MTN. As advertised on their brochure i received the Mac Book Pro with a E3131 Huawei Modem. Upon receiving the goods i tried to use the modem and it was not recognised on the laptop. I called MTN customer service and was informed that the modem would work however i needed to get some software upgraded on it to work. this all did not make sense to me however i was assured that it would work, i just needed to go to MTN and give it to them. I then went to MTN Braamfontein and relayed my story. I was informed they could not help me as they were not a service centre and gave me an address for the nearest service centre. I then went to Rosebank MTN service centre and was informed that the modem i had was not compatible with the laptop and this was a known fact. I was informed that they should not have sold the modem to me to begin with and the lady that assisted me gave me the name of the modem i needed to get. It is disheartenenting that i had to find this out at a much later stage and that i had to call and go to a different MTN branch just to get help. I was sold a modem that does not work and had to sort it out myself!!
