Phone SIM card was not swopped

My phone was on Wed 1st of may, I managed to suspend my contract and then went to the mtn in eastgate to get a sim swop so I could reactivate my contract on a new sim. I was told that it would take 2-24 hrs to activate. I waited until Saturday night and still nothing so I called the mtn customer service and a guy told me that "the sim was activate but my number was not connected to the network" whatever that means and that he would fix it and I just needed to take my battery out for 15 mins and it would be working. Sunday late afternoon it still wasn't working so I called mtn again and a lady told me that my sim was activated but it showed that it was activate on my original sim and that no sim swop had been done!!! Must it always be such a complication with mtn! Even worse I signed an insurance form with mtn to insure my phone and when I tried to claim apparently I have NO INSURANCE!!! I hope someone can get back to me and actually help me sort all this out!!!
