I am VA Waterstone Village (Somerset West) member for many years. For more than 2 years I and several others are complaining about the hygienic risks in the sauna but there is only very little improvement. Members are sitting in the sauna naked, on napkins, in dirty underwear or swimming trunks and are sweating on the wood. The next sits on that sweat and in all bacteria and infections. Even when the sweat is dried bacteria and infection is still there because the heat of the sauna does not kill it. There are displays to use a big towel but most members are ignoring it. From time to time there is control by the staff but they seem to have no hygienic training and they accept members on napkins and swimming trunks. Sometimes they hand out tiny disposal towels which are too thin and small for sauna. There are only 2 disinfection by VA per day. In every country with WHO hygienic standards this sauna would be closed immediately. Actions necessary: hygienic awareness campaign for members and staff, more controls and disinfection, accept only big towels (no sweat on wood), remove members that don't comply. Positive: The rest of the gym is really perfect and the staff very friendly.
