The (non) sense of vehicle tracking companies

The usefulness of vehicle tracking companies? Some years ago my husband bought a Land Cruiser C70. We kitted this car up over about 4 years to turn it into a full on overlander vehicle. Then we went on a trip to Natal in February 2012. On the way back, we stayed at a small hotel in the Natal Midlands. During the night, our tracking company, Tracker, sent us an SMS to say the vehicle may have been tampered with.By the time we got outside the car was gone. Of course we had high hopes, Tracker did contact us after all. What we found out later was that Tracker had only sent us this SMS an hour and 20 minutes after the event, as per the security camera record of the hotel. Sadly all they managed to find was the unit. The car was gone. We were devastated, but decided to start again. We bought a secondhand Land Cruiser. In March, we went to visit friends in Melville. When we came out, the car was gone. My husband immediately phoned Netstar, our new tracking company. They did not even know that the car was, early warning and all. The car is still gone with Netsar and all.
So I am asking: are the vehicle tracking companies of any use at all?
