Major security breach in ADT system

Having moved out of a rented premises in Nov 2012, I waited for the new tenant to move in and take-over the rental as per normal. She only moved in in December and when I returned from leave in January, I called her to arrange transfer.

She informed me that she had obtained another security company and they had taken over the entire alarm system. I then called ADT to find out how this was possible, as I gave no-one my password. After several calls, the ADT agent informed me that their master codes are only changed once a month, so an ex-employee must have moved to another security company, and taken over the system that way.

For obvious reasons I immediately cancelled the contract in writing and received a ref number (and informed my bank to stop the debit order). Since then I have been receiving smses each week. Finally last week I contacted ADT again, and after 3 emails, the original agent called me and informed me that they would go and get the alarm system back, and that I needed to pay 30% of the remaining contract.

I informed him that only once he has the alarm, will I consider that.

How is it that I must pay for something which was hijacked by another company?
