A client of mine submitted a VAT return December 2011, the client did massive purchases for the VAT period and therefore were supposed to receive an amount of approximately R500k back from SARS. However, SARS automatically cancelled ALL the input VAT and assessed the client on the TOTAL output VAT. After more than a year of submitting objections and invoices the company receives a final demand. After numerous efforts to contact the person who's name is indicated on the letter, it is determined that the audit was finalised. This means that NO input taxes was granted despite the company submitting them as evidence.
The individual at collections is not at liberty to disclose the auditor's contact details (which might be fair granted independence issues), however, not even the individual from collections can contact this auditor to discuss the situation.
It appears that SARS are so "jacked up", it can only serve itself, not the clients it is intended to assist.
I am not surprised that SARS is listed as a company "who does not respond"... I am so disappointed and frustrated with the service.
With the multi-million rand spending on IT services, surely SARS can do better...
