Unpaid Bills for a member who is now deceased

My dad was a member of Discovery Health.
He had a terminal illness and was treated for same.
On 16 May 2013 we received a script from his Oncologist, medication received from Dischem which was for an amount of R1847.34. A recommendation was done to Discovery to be paid under the oncology benefit. Feedback received and was authorised. My Dad passed away on the 21 May 2013. We then subsequently cancelled the medical aid in the same month. No-one from Discovery informed us that the premium had to be paid for May 2013, failing which claims would be cancelled.
I have since made several calls and had various dicussions with your contact centre but to no avail.
If we pay the premium for May 2013 of R3242.00, will Discovery settle the claim with Dischem of R1847.34.
I am now advised that we have to pay for premiums for May up until September before you can consider paying the outstanding claim at Dischem. I need to understand the logic behind this analagy, why would be pay R16210.00 for the 5 months premium to pay a claim of R1847.34 to Dischem. If Discovery can confirm we pay the premium for May 2013, I will do the transfer today on condition they undertake to pay Dischem.
