Garmin effectiveness

I thinking seriously of getting rid of my Garmin Nuvi and switching to TomTom. Irrespect of how I set my Garmin it will take me all over the place arriving at my destination about an hour longer than if I had used a TomTom which will take me about 30 minutes. Sometimes I'm incorrectly directed into dead end roads and townhouse complexes. I upgraded my maps about a year ago. Garmini charges for map updates whereby TomTom maps are free WHY??
I've used my wife"s TomTom and found it to be more accurate and gets me faster to my destination. Could anyone at Garmin give me an answer before I switch to TomTom??
