Garmin free lifetime maps

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 40 on 29 JUne 2012. On 20 October 2012 Garmin launched free lifetime maps on the same model at virtually the same price. I suspect that the seller, being Cape Union Mart, had knowledge of the change but did not inform me. I contacted the National Sales Manager of Garmin for some relief but was refused any assistance. I feel that Garmin cheated me as a user of more that 5 years.
