Excessive data usage on the iPhone 5

I note from the blogosphere that there is a broader problem with data usage on the iPhone 5. Since I received my iPhone 5 in February, the data usage has been far beyond what I have ever consumed using my smart phones where my last data bill was 1, 3gb where it never reaches beyond 500mb on my previous HTC phones. This is especially the case as I use my iPad 2 for all heavy data usage and it is always with me. It also explains why my home broadband usage has jumped from ~3 to 7 gb to a ridiculous ~17gb (where I have been blaming my brother in law).

The iPhone store in Canal Walk looked a the iPhone and confirmed that all the settings are correct to minimise cellular data usage and referred me back to MTN who they suggested should refund me. There was certainly not adequate disclosure of this usage and the contract is certainly not performing in line with expectations. I plan to discontinue use of the iPhone (as soon as I can change SIM to fit my old HTC Desire) and will see what the Consumer Protection Act can do to assist. It is a shame as it is a great phone but I can't pay these insane charges.
