Audi a8 4.2 sent to audi to remove and refit steering rack to have oil leak repaired by steering specialist.
This vehicle was booked in at audi south coast and the steering rack was removed. The rack was collected by natal power steering and completely reconditioned as it was leaking oil.
The rack was returned to audi to refit and about 3 days later I was contacted to collect vehicle.
Included in the job was wheel alignment and new oil.
After about 2 days the customer complained about a noise from the suspension. It was found by redline tuning to be that the steering rack mountings were loose and the whole rack was moving. The technican that worked on audis response was simple "that's impossible" he said. The vehicle was returned to audi and the technician tightened the rack mounts and appologised profusely and the customer was sent on his way. After which it was noticed that there was freeplay on the steering. Audi told him that the collumn was worn and they did not touch the steering. After much debate it was found that the collumn was not tightened either. What if he had been killed? As it could have caused the steering not to work. Very bad workmanship. And from audi???
