In September this year, a car which was hired from Europcar drove into my car. The driver apologised as he acknowledged it was his fault. He told me his company was renting the car from Europcar whilst he was in Durban. I took all his details down and then I phoned Europcar the next morning to see if the guy had reported the accident which he hadn't. I said to the person over the phone that i would be reporting the case to the police and would be submitting the claim to my insurance. My understanding of car rentals was that a deposit was always taken from the person or company hiring the car in case there are damages to the car, assuming this covered claims made against the company for damages to other vehicles. The attorneys for my insurer made contact with Europcar who said that their policy doesn't cover payment of claims for third party (which in this case was the excess i had to pay to get my vehicle repaired). They are now left with no other choice but to go against the individual who was driving the car to recover the excess i had to pay. Poor excuse from Europcar which leaves me in debt now for something that wasn't my fault.. bad on you Europcar!
