Should I bring my bank statements to buy Ice Cream

After a night out having dinner with friends and family, we thought we would stop for some Froyo in Bedfordview. My husband gave the teenager at the till his credit card as we had no cash with us (How difficult can it be to swipe a card?). We were told that it was "declined". Which was strange as he has a huge limit available? Not to cause a fuss, he gave his ABSA debit card... which was also "declined". At that stage the manager was called to assist to give the card a try too.. Declined once again (Not on the pay point keypad by the way, according to the "system" where you need to type the card's details in... no swiping involved)
At that point I got very frustrated as we were holding up a long queue of people waiting to pay. My husband then gave his Standard Bank credit card. The manger starred at it blankly, then back at us, like we were some artists trying to 2 bowls of ice cream. Rude, unprofessional. He told us that we need to pay via cash (apparently it's the only way to purchase goods in SA..) Not a way to start out your new franchise?
