I've received 2 SMSs from Absa saying that I have a foreign payment that needs to be cleared. The first SMS they gave me an email address and phone number.

I thought it was spam or a phishing attack at first as Absa clearly state that they will not send you emails or SMS of this nature.

But I am expecting a payment so I emailed the address given. It has been at least a week and there has been no reply.

I've also tried to call the number provided 0860 109 799 twice. The first time I was left on hold and no one picked up. The second time I couldn't get through.

I'd like to know the following from Absa:
1. Is this a real SMS from Absa?
2. If so why are you breaking your security policies by sending me this info via SMS? Why are you no longer phoning your business clients to clear these payments?
3. Will you answer my email if it is a genuine query from Absa? Or must I just persevere on the phone until someone responds?
