What happens if you pay into a closed account

I did an internet transfer of R200.00 into a Standard bank credit card only to find out later that the account was closed. With finding that out I waited a couple of days to see if the money would be transfered back into my Nedbank account. When that did not happen I went into the branch and the consultant put me on the phone with the Nedbank call centre where I spoke to a consultant and was told the money might be in a suspense account and gave me a number to call. I tried calling the number and it did not work. I then went back into the branch and they again connected me to the call centre only to be told that I will need to pay an amount of R350.00 for the money to be recalled. Where do all the money go that people pay into wrong account and can nobody help me to trace the money without that rediculous fee of R350.00. Nobody asked me for the reference number of the transaction that I did to even help me trace the money, I was just told to find out from Standard bank was the account closed where I paid it into - which I did seeing that it was my sister's account and she works for Standard bank. What bad service and poor assistance.
