I have an ABSA Platinum card that I haven't used for years and am trying to close it. I was told to change the debit order to the full outstanding balance - and then call a couple of days later... unsure exactly why I need to keep a diary, can you not load on your system to close the card? But...
As soon as the instalment has been deducted (which is your account fee by the way), the card has a balance again and cannot be closed. I need to go to a branch and make a cash deposit (which no doubt will incur cash deposit fees!) in order for the account to close.
Please just close the account - you can see it hasn't been used in years, the card has long since expired and it is only accruing monthly charges. You can even recover your outstanding fee - just put a debit order through (like you have been doing every single month) and then close the account.
