I tried to some internet banking on the Absa website and each time the error was 'not verified.' I presumed that the seller's banking details were incorrect. That afternoon, I tried to buy groceries and my debit card declined. I called Absa call centre and was told there was a FICA stop on my card. No-one had even contacted me to tell me I needed to FICA let alone tell me my card was about to be stopped or that it had been stopped. I had actually changed my name (got married) 2 months earlier and I FICA'D then at the Constantia branch! I went in to Meadowridge on the Saturday and they sorted out the problem. They could see on the system no-one had contacted me about FICA and my card and they could also see that my ID doc hadn't been correctly scanned in by the consultant at Constantia and that the consultant hadn't captured things correctly hence my card had been stopped for FICA. My card had been stopped for a week before I realised, if it had been any longer there would've been problems with my debit orders and penalties. Very shoddy, Absa! Please train your staff properly and notify your customers of problems. If I'd been overseas it would've been a serious problem.
