Household insurance compusary to insure my bike

I was sold a policy by Standardbank Insurance. today i changed my address and was informed that household insurance is COMUPLSARY to insure the bike. i want to know what nonsence is this??? why do i have to insure contents (washing machine, microwave, tv...)
