Personal Loan Dispute on Settlement amount

On Wednesday 30 October 2013, I called the Sanlam call centre and asked to be sent a letter regarding the settlement amount on my personal loan.
The friendly lady then confirmed my details and then sent me the letter. The amount quoted on the letter was valid from 30 October 2013 until 5 November 2013
In good faith I paid the amount as it was quoted on the letter that I received from Sanlam. I then proceeded to email the original letter with my proof of payment to them to finalise the closure of my account.
Yesterday I phoned the call centre again and asked if I can obtain a formal letter from Sanlam stating that this loan has been settled. The friendly lady on the other side then told me that there still is an outstanding debit order that needs to be paid before the account can be closed.
Imagine my complete and utter disbelief when I was told this.
My question is how do I get a letter of settlement for an amount but not the full amount? That means that the actual letter of settlement is not worth the paper it is written on.
