Over booking of SAA flight

I booked a ticket from cape town to port elizabeth on the 22 december 2013, upon checking in, i was told the flight is full and there has been over booking. i was then told to see the flight controller who would perhaps see what could be done. when i approached the flight controller he told me he can't let me on this flight as it full already.but surprisingly the lady before me he allowed on to the very same flight. he then referred me to the ticket sales where the person behind the desk was not at all interested and told me i have to pay in an amount of R1300 to get on the next flight to PE.

my question is why should i pay in that extra amount of money when it was SAA's fault the flight was over booked.
after paying the amount the flight was supposed to depart at 15:00 but was delayed for 3hours and only boarded at 18:00
I've been on the airport since 10:15 and spent the entire day waiting and the staff had no reason to why the flight was delayed. all they said there is some technical difficulties
