I have a 5GB data package from Cell C which I've been using for the last 2 years. I don't think I have ever gone out of bundle. Last month I apparently used roughly 22GB of data which has led to a bill of over R6500. A couple of calls to the call centre which proved a waste of time, so I contacted the Cell C representative on Mybroadband. He was very helpful and sent me a detailed data usage report. It shows about 19GB of NTP traffic which potentially indicates a faulty configuration on my 3G router or in some software.
If we assume that the fault is on my hardware (I still have to investigate) and therefore not Cell C's problem, then that means I've used a total of 22 217 585.18KB in the month according to the report. Given that I have a 5GB plan, then the out of bundle portion = 22 217 585.18KB - 5 242 880KB = 16 974 705.18KB. This equates to 16 576.86 MB. At a rate of 15c/MB this means a charge of R2486.53 (not R5725.06). I asked the rep to check this for me and he came back with a response saying that I was being charged the equivalent of 34.54c/MB (before VAT). This is more than double the rate advertised by Cell C. I have had no response to my query on this difference.
