Misinformed by vodacom about my contract

I had a contract with Vodacom. In 2011 i went to Vaal mall to settle and cancel it. I was told that the contact was going to expire in a month's time anyway therefore there was no need to cancel it. They told me that the contract will be cancelled automatically. In 2012 i realized that a certain amount of money had been deducted from my account. When i checked my statement i found out that it was Vodacom when i phoned their call center i was send from pillar to post. It looked like they didn't want to help me at all. Anyway finally what they told me was that it was just a once off payment but my account had been cancelled. I belived them because no money was deducted thereafter. Now in 2013 i have recieved a call from Vodacom's lawyers saying that i owe them R750.00 and i'm no longer employed i simply don't have that kind of money. When i had the money and willing to pay them they gave me the wrong information. Now i don't know what to do.
