Why is someone else's mistake now OUR problem?

The debit order on my wife's account was run over a week late, which resulted in it being returned as there was no longer any money left in the account. When my wife became aware of this fact she paid immediately via EFT.

Later she received an SMS stating her service was barred pending remittance of R11.40. We phoned MTN and asked what happend. Apparently FNB charged MTN a returned debit order fee. Which they then passed on to us.

I asked the agent we spoke to if they can get it reversed as we should not be liable for someone else's mistake. The answer was the usual "I can't help you. My manager says the bank sent us the cost so we can't do anything". Rubbish.

So I asked for a complete breakdown of the order of events including reference numbers showing when the debit order was sent to the bank, when it was returned, the costs the bank charged etc. Was told we would receive it within 2 - 24 hours... It's close to a week now.
