Cell C takes your credit balance

I live in Zambia and visit SA regularly. In May 2013 I purchased a Cell C sim card from the Gateway branch, and charged the account with a couple of hundred rands worth of airtime. At the time of purchase I mentioned that I live in Zambia and would use the card for about 3 weeks and then be returning home and would not be using the sim card for about 6 or 7 months. I was told this was not a problem, when I returned to SA I could go to any Cell C branch and they would reactivate the card.
I went into the Ladysmith Branch of Cell C today and I was informed that the number had been reallocated and the balance on the card was forfeit.
I am not sure what the balance was, possibly less than R100, but the point is that I was misinformed by the Gateway branch firstly, and secondly (and more importantly), the balance (whatever it was) becomes the property of Cell C!
That seems like to me, but who am I? Just a dissatisfied customer, nothing to worry about.
