Making it difficult to Cancel a contract -Illegal?

MTN advised that I need to phone the call centre when my contract expires. Today I made 8 phone calls (holding on for the 8th time as we speak for an 1 hour 14 minutes!) I am yet to speak to a Cancellations agent to cancel my contract and convert to a pay as you go customer so that I dont lose my number. Is MTN blatantly trying to make it difficult for me to cancel my contract? Why is it so difficult to get through to Cancellations? On three of the 8 calls I made I held on for 20 minutes each with no luck. Is this MTN's way to force customers to now pay pro-rata day to day until we finally get through to you???
