Difficulty changing to TOP - UP

MTN wont change my account to top up even though I explained to them that their open plan is costing me a lot and I am unable to afford it. I am not sure how else to explain this to them, this plan we are on is not working for me, I am charged twice what I had planned to pay per month. Now I have to cancel my contract with them for something that can so easily be corrected by just converting me to top up.
