New contract / delay

I have to follow up on the progress of my contract. I asked them to port my number, however they were taking longer than usual, so I requested them to please stop it and activate the sim card I received from MTN. When I got home later the day, they blocked the sim card. When I phoned in they stated that the port has been processed and it will take 3 - 5 working days. So once again I have no phone to use, what is the point of my contract then?
Every time I phone them to as what the story is, they blame something else.
I used Vodacom for many years and decided to change to MTN because of the good deal they offered me, but I am really regretting it now!
