Will not return my phone as I lost my receipt

I took my business cellphone in for repair at the Vodashop Kingsmead on 16th January 2013. On leaving the phone I was issued a receipt. I received sms notifications of the progress of the repairs to my phone via my wife's cellphone and on 23rd January 2013, I received a message informing me that my phone was ready for collection. I then discovered that I had misplaced my receipt. I went to Kingsmead Vodashop on 25th January 2013 at about 16H30 and explained to the to the sales woman that I had lost my receipt but I had my ID, my wife's phone on which the update messages were being sent as well as my wife's ID with me (I even offered to call in my wife as a witness). However the sales woman refused to accept these items and said that I needed to make an affidavit at the police station to stating that I had lost my receipt. Surely the items I had with me are sufficient to prove that I am the owner of the phone! Does this mean that whoever found my receipt could walk into the store and present the receipt and they would hand them my phone (people coming to collect phone's were asked for their receipt only and not their ID)? This simply does not make sense.
