Failure To repair cellphone on warranty

I have had a contract with MTN for close to 5 years now and a few weeks ago I took my Cellphone (SonyEricsson Xperia X10) in for repairs as it would not switch on anymore. As I was within the last few months of the two years of my warranty cover, I didn't expect for there to be any problems getting fixed. I was surprised when i eventually called in to collect my phone and was told that they were unable repair a phone which for me seemed like a mechanical issue over a ware-and-tear issue. This was a surprise to me as I had brought the phone in numerous times before in the same physical condition and all they did to the phone was upgrade the software and the physical nature of the handset was never an issue. I would assume that they based the mechanical condition of the phone on the physical appearance as it had a few chips on it (same chips and cracks it had in previous repairs). I asked for the front desk employees to explain the T's and C's of the warranty plan (as I believe that I was within my agreement to have it repaired) and I was not given a satisfactory response, instead I was advised that I can buy a replacement handset for an amount of R6000.
