Speed stick obsolete

Bought pre-paid data (1gig per month for 12 months) with speed stick. Re-newed for another 12 months last year.
I had issues with my computer and when I had it repaired I tried to access the internet but found I could not.
Went to the branch at vincent park and was told there was nothing they could do as the speed stick was too old and the old software was now not available.
To sort out the problem I was further advised that I now had to buy another speed stick for R399.00.
So in the meanwhile I lose 1gig and whatever gigs are still outstanding for which by the way Vodacom took my cash. How can they cause my speed stick to be obsolete without telling me before I bought the contract?
Maybe I feel that they have my cash? One way to make sure you lose a customer FOREVER! NOT HAPPY!
