I took a contract with Telkom in May 2013, Unlimited airtime that came out with a Samsung S4 smartphone. While I was charging the phone overnight in July, there was smoke coming from the phone.
I immediatelly switched off the power and the charging port part of the phone was burnt. I took it to Telkom because I knew that it is still under warranty. After 8days I went to the shop to find out what is happening with my phone. I was then told that I am liable for the costs of repair which is R1200.
I asked them why should I pay while the phone is under warranty. I was told that the warranty does not cover this or else I must prove that Eskom had an overcurrent. This I fail to understand because all other appliances did not seem to have a problem.
Then I was told there is nothing I can do, I must take this claim to Samsung. This I fail to understand because I took the contract with Telkom not Samsung. Or they will give the phone back damaged as it is if I fail to pay the amount. I have never experienced such bad service in my life.
How can I be liable for damages I did not cause? I have not been given any technical proof showing that I was at fault in causing this damage.
