Why is it so difficult to cancel a contract

Hi I have been with Vodacom for 25 years. I currently have/had 4 contracts with them paying in excess of R3000 per month. My one contract expired on the 6th May 2013. Since February I have been to 3 outlets (Cape Town, Gauteng and Stilbaai - I travel 5000km per month) requesting them to cancel this contract. I have made numerous calls to the accounts and contract departments of Vodacom to request that they cancel the contract. In the last 3 calls I was told that they have changed my contract to prepaid, which I did not request. Now end of June I am billed again for R452.61 due to data usage. Am I missing something - when we cancel a contract, surely it is closed, like as in not accessible again. They refuse to listen to my side of the story and just keep saying that data was used so I have to pay for it. Maybe they will listen to you and take note of the complaint against them. Vodacom is great on advertising sales (contract and services) but when it comes to complaints they have disappeared from the scene.
