Gobbling up my data!

I signed a post paid straight up 100 contract Samsung S3 with CellC on April12th. My first bill was around R400 but as I was aware of the connection fee, I wasn't too concerned. My next and current bill is well over the R500 mark! I made 14 actual phone calls, and to my astonishment 450 internet calls, just about daily since the start of the contract, including the very first day, so my call charges alone are over R300! During May, I complained that the battery needed frequent recharging, and I was told to switch off the mobile data. This was done and has remained off, meaning no emails etc received. Today on complaining bitterly in the store, saying I have not been using the 'net no aps, no downloads & no emails, I was told that because the S3 is a smart phone it uses the internet all the time in the background, "updating". Updating what exactly? Up until now, with a different SP I have been using a BlackBerry, & getting emails at a fraction of the cost.of what I now pay for absolutely nothing as far as I can ascertain. I am a very senior citizen, but not senile-- why was I not told that this very smart phone would be smartly gobbling up my money & giving nil in return?
