I recently migrated my mobile account from MTN to Cell C, during April. I did this because the cost of Cell C packages were very competitive and it looked like the general coverage had improved. I tested a Cell C sim card for a couple of days and it seemed like it would meet my needs.
However, in general the signal quality is quite pathetic. I live in Sandton and work in the JHB CBD, in both areas I'm barely able to make or receive calls. The data coverage is even worse, even when my device indicates 3G I can't connect to WhatsApp or send/received iMessages - when it is possible to do either of these, the connectivity is intermittent and unreliable at best. I sent an initial network feedback report on the 8 May, to which I have yet to receive any response.
The packages may seem appealing and the claims that they make in terms of coverage impressive, but I really regret making the switch to Cell C. If it wasn't so costly to switch to another network, I would do that gladly - it seems pointless to opt for anything other than Vodacom or MTN as bad as they are. My experience my differ to other customers, but I had hoped it would have been a worthwhile move.
