Upgrading BlackBerry software

I have a BlackBerry contract. Suddenly my BBM service does not work. The lady at Vodacom informed me that my BlackBerry's program must be updated and I have to pay for them to copy my phones data from it and replace it. I complained and asked why should I have to do that. She explained my BlackBerry's phone program is "old" and outdated and will cause problems. I entered into a 2 year contract with Vodacom and am paying for the service. I cannot see why I must pay for any upgrade or data replacement. The BlackBerry program worked fine up to now, so how come it suddenly is outdated. This seams to be a rip off and money racket from Vodacom. I insist on a working phone with all the facilities I've agreed on in my contract. If this is allowed to happen it means Vodacom (or BlackBerry) can every few months just upgrade their phone's "program" and the user has to pay.
