Membership not used in 1 year contract

I am a member of virgin active benoni and have been for the last 10 years and my wife for the last 4 four years and recently she has not been going for a year or so yet I continued to pay and finally she said just cancel the contract and i said okay just leave it as every year they would ask if I wanted to continue yet no called they just kept on billing and eventually i stopped paying her account and just paid for mine as i go to gym everyday the did eventually call to say that there was an outstanding amount to which i replied that the membership hasn't been used in a year or more and that they should cancel it and that i was not going to pay for the one month fees that was outstanding and they said it is fine. A month later I get a call from Norman Bisset & associates stating that they are doing collections on behalf of Virgin Active and that the oustanding amount has gone up to R655.00 and I really feel that on Virgins behalf that acted wrongly on the consumer protection act and should have stated the procedure to be followed instead of agreeing and then setting lawyers on the client if im am wrong then so be it but feel others should know and therefore not experince this
