In Mora because of incompetence

I wanted to sign-up for a gym contract, which I signed and was told to pay a certain amount to my medical aid and forward the proof of payment to them. I could not gather the amount required to pay the medical aid. I called the sales rep (whose name I cant remember) and told him that I cannot pay the amount required and I wish not to be bound the agreement and may join at a later stage. He informed me it was in order and wanted to pay a small amount back (something like R20) which to I said they can keep it. I do not even have a membership card and now I am receiving sms messages saying my account is in arrears. I am being held responsible because someone at the gym did not do their job and cancel my contract within the safe period (5 days).
