3 YEAR OLD FRIDGE IRREPARABLE... COMPLETELY FAILED

Just over 3 years ago I bought a brand new Fridge Freezer from KIC / Whirlpool.
It stopped working completely on Monday, 7 April 2013.
12 Days later I am without a fridge or freezer because the unit has completely failed and is irreparable.
It was seen by a KIC / Whirlpool technician. His report was that it was without gas and had 'bowed'.
I had to show him the receipt as he did not believe that a fridge freezer with the problems outlined could possible be only 3 years old.
Monday 14 04 (1 week later) I received a call to say they would buy back the Unit.
A few days passed, no urgency on the part of the company, I sent 3 or 4 emails to try and speak to a manager.
He emailed me and then according to his out of office is out the office till the 22nd. Great!
He said I could pay KIC R1500 (So a total cost to me of approx R4, 500 when you include the faulty unit) and they will give me another one, exactly the same.
Excuse my ignorance, but this isn't a toaster or a kettle... I appreciate a 2 year guarantee on repairs but do you really sell products that your customers should expect to COMPLETELY FAIL after 3 years?
Would be nice if someone could pick up the phone to discuss...
