Scratches on the ring

My husband brought a ring from brown on December 2011. Now the ring has scratches on the inside and it is starting to hurt his finger. When he went to inquire at browns they say we must pay in order for them to fix it.
We don't understand as the scratches are on the inside. How can you scratch a ring on the inside? If it was outside we could understand.
When we bought the ring we recieved such great service, now that something is not right with the ring we must pay. The ring is less than two years old.
