Refuse to exchange defective product / refund money after 2 days

On 26 Feb 2022 we bought a rayobi 2 stroke petrol chainsaw from builders warehouse in Bedworthpark Vereeniging. It didn't work struggled to start/ would not idle. On Sunday my husband was called out to work so we took it back the Monday morning. A man working at the chainsaw dept tested the saw and it confirmed the problem.
The supervisor told us that they have to send it back to rayobi. We asked to speak to the manager. They called Frikkie Holl the sales manager. We explained to him that the chainsaw is not working and requested to exchange it for one that is working. He refused. He said any product that was used had to be send back to rayobi. I asked him what if they start a new one in the store before a customer takes it home. He said they may not do that. It they do that and it doesn't work they still have to send it for repairs because it was used.!!!???
I asked him how that is possible - if you are not allowed to start it how would you know if it works or not.
He told us if he replace it the store will loose money.
We asked him nicely to understand our dilemma. We already have a electrical chainsaw also rayobi but we are struggling to get a new chain sprocket. That is why we bought another one. My husband took a week's leave from work to cut a tree that was close to our garage. We needed the chainsaw immediately.
He promised us that we will have it back before the end of the week (4 march 2022) until now we haven't heard a word. My husbands leave was wasted and we are still without a chainsaw or a refunf to buy one somewhere else.
Someone else in the store told us that he is misleading us. To repair a product and have it returned to the store usually takes up to 21 days.
We are now sick and tired of this. As consumers we have thevright to ask for a replacement of refund after 2 days if purchasing a product that doesn't work. We would like them to refund us immediately to enable us to pay for treefellers tto remove the tree.
