How is this even possible

I went to the Alberton Makro Branch, and bought a few clothing items for my husband, as well as some steaks and chicken. I went though the till, but I couldn't understand why my bill was so high, anyway, I thought if there is a problem, security will pick it up. I still made a comment to my daughter saying that how on earth can they check so many items so quickly. When I got to my car I noticed that I was charged for a hosepipe starter kit for R369-00 which I did not buy, and security "checked". I went to the security officer, and she then called the supervisor, who refunded me my R369-00 when I showed her. Now, my question is: all items are charged when the barcode is scanned, so where did she get the barcode from? It makes me wonder how many times I have paid for something I did not get, or should I say buy? I have also tried to contact the branch several times, and every time I am asked in connection with what? When I tell them, I am left holding on for ever, or even cut off. I would just like to bring the problem to their attention.
