Mix Telematics Africa (Matrix Vehicle Tracking)
Matrix unit shorted out my car & caused damage

I bought a 2009 Fortuner in 2011, unbeknown to me that there was an Matrix tracking unit in it. The previous owner no longer required the unit and so it was inactive, a fact he did'nt need to disclose to me. While driving the unit shorted out due to water damage, shown to me by a Toyota mechanic. The unit was just lying in the frame of the door (still connected) with no waterproofing on or around it. On contacting Matrix I was told that the initial contract was not with me but with the previous owner and therefore not their responsibility. If the unit was placed in a strategic location and was waterproofed a short would not have occurred. Due to poor installation I am now facing a bill to rewire my car. One cannot expect Toyota to cater for tracking installation nor should I be expected to cover repairs due to poor installation, whether I am a client of theirs or not. An accredited installer must have installed the device and it is a matrix product that caused the damage. Surely such expenses should be covered by them? If not, then the public should be made aware that, should they not remove a unit from their car and it causes damage, the consumer will have to foot the bill...
