Out of date maps on a new device?

I was given a Tomtom XXL for my birthday this month (October 2013). Very nice, device seems pretty comprehensive, easy to see screen... But in the two weeks I have had it, have discovered a major intersection in the West Rand that it doesn't see, my folks' place that has been there for over 8 years shows no street names so I can't allocate an address, and the same problem for the therapy yard I work at near Walkerville - some roads are shown, but the one where the yard is doesn't have a name allocated, so I can't save it as a location to send clients. How can a 'new' device be so out of date??
Also, your update info is VERY misleading! Map updates "From R250". Click on Update maps, and you get told you need to pay over R1000 for four quarterly map updates (never mind how your 10% discount on the original charge of -R974 actually shows an increase! :-)
