My son's school recently had hearing specialists to conduct tests on all the pupils, my sons hearing was tested (at my cost) and they advised that he should see an ENT specialist. I then phoned bankmed to find an ENT specialist, Bankmed said that he would need to go to a GP first inorder that they refer him to the ENT and they will then pay 100% of medical aid rates for the specialist, if i don't go to a GP and go direct to the specialist they will only pay 80%.
If i go to a GP, that will be another R400.00 through my medical aid, a further unneeded expense as i already have a hearing specialist telling me i need to go to a specialist. The call centre just tells me that those are the scheme rules and that this is done to save the scheme money. In my case this is costing money not saving. so what i should do is go to a GP, spend money i don't need to spend then they will pay 100%, if not i end up paying, as they will only pay 80%. Doesn't make sense and we wonder why medical aid costs are increasing.
