In February 2012 I was the fortunate recipient of a cochlear implant. I had received confirmation from Discovery Health that they would pay a certain amount and that I was responsible for R65 000. I was expecting this and accepted it. A claim was submitted by Southern ENT, the supplier of the implant to Discovery Health for the full amount which was then paid to me and I then paid Southern ENT. To my surprise Discovery paid the full amount to me, including the R65 000 which I was expecting to pay. No reversal of payment occurred, nor did I receive any calls from Discovery so I discussed the issue with my audiologist from the implant unit at Tygerberg Hospital who then made contact with Southern ENT. The reply came back that I was very lucky, Discovery had paid in full. And so I accepted my luck and put the money towards essential dental treatment. To my absolute surprise 18 months later Discovery are now claiming R65 000 from me. I do not have an income and have offered to pay R2 000 per month. The consultant from Member's Debt Administration will not provide me with a letter confirming this agreement nor will he guarantee me that this will not affect future claims I may make.
