Specialist follow up verses GP?

I was hospitilised a week ago for a nerve condition in my face and when I discharged the specialist gave me a return date for a check up. In the past I was told that my auth I used for hospititlisation is valid for 30 days. I ended up paying cash for my follow-up. It does not make sense that I was hospitilised by a neurologist but I have to go fo a follow up to my GP? Then I call to get an auth & instead of telling "mam our process has changed" the consultant takes my call and then tells me the department that issues auth does not take calls. I am truly annoyed and frustrated. When I was admited I was also given the run around. I also called and was not assisted - when I was admitted it took me almost 6hours to get admitted (i was in alot of pain and had to lay and wait in casualty) - I could hardly speak because of this condition. All this has left a very bad taste in my mouth (and pain)... I have never had issues in the past!!! What has happened?
