Discovery Health
What do we pay exhorbitant premiums for??

My husband and I have been with Discovery Health since 2008, we never had a claim and have been paying well over R2 000 a month without fail all this time. On 23 February we were involved in a major car accident (a drunk driver driving on the wrong side of the road hit us head on) and I, being 35 weeks pregnant, was admitted to hospital. Everything was authorised but Discovery didn't pay for R70. I called them, they advised that it was for the TV, I said I didn't have one, then they said it was for the dry cleaning of the gown??! Seriously? That's pathetic. It's the principle, not the R70. I had my baby in March and they only paid R2 700 for the gynea (he charged R10 318) and R1 660 for the epidural (that cost R4 900). They say that it's what they consider medical aid rates, it's pathetic. Not one gynea will deliver a baby in a private hospital for R2700! Thank goodness I had Complimed Gap cover (which the medical aids are trying to close down!). Complimed paid the shortfall, R10 800, promtly without issues. Medical aid is a necessary evil in this country and I wish we could go without it. One thing is for sure, I am currently shopping around for a better cover!
